The first limousine was a luxury car built in 1902 and was effectively the extension of a large car. The design placed the chauffeur outside the main cabin under a covered compartment which resembled a cloaked hood traditionally worn by the shepherds of the Limousin region in France. And so the name stuck.
The more familiar stretch limousine was an American creation, built in 1928 and used to transport the big bands of the time along with all of their instruments and equipment. Since then the limo has offered a luxurious and stylish mode of travel for getting from A to B.
The fame of the limousine developed from the 60′s and 70′s when limousines would transport the rich and famous, including presidents and moviestars to and from celebrity events.
Traditional limousines today are super stretch limousines which can take up to 10 passengers in comfort. Some models such as the Chrysler 300c limousine have a fifth door to allow wedding parties and larger groups easier access in and out of the limousine.
Limousines continue to be one of the most luxurious and fun ways to travel, and particularly to arrive, at an important event. A chauffeured limousine ride, whether to a wedding or a convention makes the occasion a day to remember.
